Redefining “Accelerated” Flight Training

To most flight schools, “accelerated” means cramming a rating into a few stressful weeks, resulting in massive flight hour bills, zero rest, and intense check-ride anxiety.


I define accelerated differently:

Fewer Total Flight Hours

You show up to the aircraft ready, confident, and ahead of the airplane. You enjoy your training, save thousands of dollars, and arrive at your check-ride fully prepared to pass on the first attempt.

Fewer Total Flight Hours

The National Average: 85+ flight hours to get a Private Pilot’s License. Instrument Rating, 55 hrs beyond having built 50 hrs xC PIC time.

My Standard: We target finish lines closer to the FAA minimum of 40 hours for Private FAR § 61.109(a), and 15 hours for Instrument dual FAR § 61.65(d) –see my IR Oriented Time-building combined syllabus IR program.

How we do it

The Airplane is a Lousy Classroom


Trying to learn a complex maneuver for the first time in a noisy, vibrating cockpit—while paying for fuel and aircraft rental—is a recipe for frustration.

That is why a simulator isn’t an optional afterthought in my syllabus. It is a requirement from Day One. We use a strict ground-to-simulator-to-aircraft sequence. We do not start the engine until we’re fully coordinated on the ground.

By “coordinated”, I mean far more than just stick-and-rudder muscle memory. Together, we will use precise maneuver scripts to eliminate common errors, build sharp situational awareness, and seize every opportunity to apply and correlate the ground knowledge in a controlled environment before hitting the starter switch.


Three Reasons We Start in the Sim:


1.- The sim has a PAUSE btn: We can freeze the flight right when a mistake happens, brief it instantly while it’s fresh, and retry. No scribbling notes to figure out on the ground an hour later.

2.- Financial & Environmental Efficiency: Sim time is a fraction of the cost of flight time. We make our mistakes, build our confidence, and burn zero fossil fuels before we ever touch the real aircraft.

3.- Total Safety: We safely introduce challenging scenarios and emergency procedures in a controlled environment so you are completely prepared for the real thing.

A Long-Term Strategy (Zero to Commercial)


My syllabus doesn’t just look at your next check-ride; it looks at your path to Commercial Pilot.

While the FAA only requires a fraction of simulator time for the PPL, my students strategically build up to 50 hours of motion sim time; precisely when those hours are most helpful : 25 for a Private Pilot License, and 25 for an Instrument Flight Rating. These hours carry forward and credit toward your Commercial Pilot License (CPL) requirements FAR § 61.129(i)(1-i).

Foreign License Conversions: The Power of the Details

Under FAR § 61.75(d), pilots converting a foreign PPL can convert their Instrument Rating (IR) seamlessly at the same time by including their IR written exam results.

Missing this fine print forces pilots into unnecessary, stressful, and costly IR check-ride(s) just to regain an instrument rating they already hold.

Instrument Training: Stop Wasting Your Cross-Country (xC-PIC) Hours

The FAA requires only 15 hours of dual instruction with a CFI-I to qualify for the Instrument check-ride, yet the national average is around 50 hours. Why the massive gap?

Most schools and instructors misinterpret FAR § 61.65(d). They let students fly their required 50 hours of xC-PIC time as VFR “$100 hamburger runs” before starting any IR training.

While those flights are fun, many pilots end up repeating the same routes, wondering where to fly next. This doesn’t just waste valuable hours –it allows bad habits to lock in those early hours, which later require costly dual instruction to break.

The Combined Syllabus Solution

In my base IR syllabus, we combine your 15 hours of Instrument Training (dual) time with your 50 hours of xC-PIC time, the greater part under the hood. We start on the right foot from flight number one:

– The First ~3 hours, dual : we master the absolute fundamentals of instrument flight to ensure precise, comfortable aircraft control.

– The Time-Building phase : Immediately after, I join you as your Safety Pilot (available at a reduced package rate) to ensure those core fundamentals stick and no bad habits form.

During Time Building we actively correlate your VFR and IFR knowledge and skills. Under the hood, we cover en-route navigation entirely, master cockpit management, tackle new IFR radio jargon.

After a few more hours of targeted instruction (dual), we use the xC-PIC time to practice instrument departures and approaches until they’re second nature. As your confidence grows, we will file IFR flight plans, practice divertions, and copy new clearances in the air.

The Verdict: Better Training, Lower Costs

By merging time-building with active learning, your formal dual hours remain low because the bulk of your learning happens naturally during your xC-PIC time.
That is exactly how the regulations intended those 40 hrs of hood time to be spent.

This process maximizes your investment and ensures your IR certificate represents genuine confidence in your real-world decision-making.

On the left, the conventional path assumes you started IR training after completing your time building along with a PPL safety pilot.
Timebuilding adds about 6k to the estimate for the conventional path.

✗   11.5k + 6k = 17.5k or more
✗   only to level up to the testing standards.

Conventional Path

On the right, the Combined Syllabus estimate accounts for timebuilding : 50 hrs xC PIC and +40 hrs hood within the soft limit of 68 hrs aircraft rental, each of those hours with a competent CFII by your side.
All for less than what timebuilding adds to the estimate for the conventional path.
✓   17.5k is considered a soft ceiling.

✓   confidence in flying real world IFR, far beyond the testing standards.

Recommending this process to other CFI-I, and following it with my IR applicants is my way of giving back to the aviation community. By shaping better, more proficient Instrument Rated pilots today, we are building the next generation of exceptional CFI-Is for our country.

I had just gone through a challenging start with a new Private Pilot applicant. As I reflected on the experience, I began compiling lessons learned—considering what I might have done differently and how I could have taken better control of circumstances that initially felt outside my influence.

Right in the middle of that reflection, the universe placed this article in my hands at exactly the right moment. As I read, I highlighted and filled the margins with comments. Then I pulled out my notebook and started taking notes.

It was all excellent—practical ideas on how I could have better handled the challenging start I had just experienced.

At the same time, the notes from that recent experience, written on the previous page of my notebook, began to connect with the new ones.

Those combined insights gradually evolved into a script—a structured series of steps, each one serving as a prerequisite for the next.

This is my “Before Takeoff” checklist of flight training—the essentials for those crucial first few flights.

Where should flight training go beyond those first few flights?
Building on those essentials for a strong start, I observed my PPL applicants making intentional progress toward their certification goals and interested in the following:

What learners ask the most:

  • When do I solo?
  • When can I go on my first solo xCountry flight?
  • When is my checkride?
I completed my own Efficient PPL syllabus by addressing these questions with more than the Practical Test in mind. My goal is always to build solid aircraft control skills that ensure safe performance under pressure; leading to safe, uneventful, and enjoyable solo flights.
As a result of this mindset, applicants will consistently meet or exceed the test standards and safely exercise their earned privileges.

My syllabus compiles my experience, the listed Pre-Solo and Solo xCountry Maneuvers and Procedures on 14 CFR Part 61 Subpart C, the ACS, and my three favorite third-party published syllabi as guides.

Those first few instrument training flights

Next, I followed the same process —starting from solid fundamentals— and developed my Instrument Flight Lab syllabus for both Instrument Rating and CFI-I applicants.

Both syllabi continue to evolve with each new experience. I use them as guides to help every learner get off to a solid start. The approach has proven effective, even with more challenging applicants, who often respond positively to this structured beginning.

School For Perfection

School For Perfection

I needed to share this story because I mentioned in a previous article which is part of my teaching philosophy. I first read it in 2015, and every time I read it again, it has been adding a deeper meaning to my aviation journey. Those are the values I strive to share with my fellow pilots.

Here’s what Wikipedia says about the author:
Richard David Bach (born June 23, 1936) is an American writer. He has written numerous flight-related works of fiction and non-fiction. His works include Jonathan Livingston Seagull (1970) and Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah (1977), both of which were among the 1970s’ biggest sellers.

Most of Bach’s books have been semi-autobiographical, using actual or fictionalized events from his life to illustrate his philosophy. His books espouse his philosophy that our apparent physical limits and mortality are merely appearance. Bach is noted for his love of aviation and his books related to flying in a metaphorical context.

Flight Simulators: from the classroom to the cockpit

The key to providing the learner with valuable experience and flight time is in accompanying the transition from the classroom to the simulator, and then to the actual airplane. It is best to go flying well-prepared with a solid foundation of knowledge and practical skills acquired on the ground.

A structured sequence—beginning in the classroom, then transitioning to a flight simulator, and finally applying skills in an actual airplane—is key in Learning aviation.

Simulators provide a controlled, immersive experience where students can apply what they’ve learned in the classroom to realistic flight scenarios. Simulators enable repeated practice as learners first develop their flying skills. This repetition is key to building muscle memory and confidence, which are crucial for safe and proficient flying.

Simulators also offer the ability to pause practice, allowing students to ask questions about concepts and techniques, and receive answers in a timely maner that help in correlating theory and practice while forming correct habit patterns from the beginning.

From a cost perspective, classroom instruction and simulator training are significantly more economical than logging hours in a real airplane, as they are not subject to the same operational costs, such as fuel, maintenance, and wear and tear. Additionally, this approach is better for the environment, as it reduces the carbon footprint associated with aviation training.

By the time the learner hops in an airplane, they are well-prepared to handle the demands of actual flight, with a solid foundation of knowledge and practical skills. This flight time is far more effective, as the flight experience acquired is more meaningful and focused on mastering higher-order thinking skills.

Time and Commitment are essential for Effective Flight Training

I highly recommend reading ‘School for Perfection.’ I first read it in 2015, and it resonated so deeply with me that it gave my aviation journey a whole new purpose. The values and principles in that story are the ones I strive to share with my students.

One of the values described in the story is time. Aviators are lifelong learners and instructors are more so when they pass on the gift of flight. The teaching/learning process just doesn’t work by the hour, under a chronometer. It requires noise cancellation, readbacks, tailoring to specific needs of the people involved, their circumstances and the sensitivity of the subject matter being covered.

Another value I find in the story is the depth of the instructor’s commitment—grieving the departure of his student as though the student were a close relative. That sense of responsibility resonates deeply with me. I owe so much to my parents, and in turn, I strive to be fully present for my own kids whenever they need me—“familiar with all available information concerning (their) flight.”–CFR 14 § 91.103

I think of their first solo the way I remember a child’s first steps; their solo cross-country like those first wobbly bicycle rides after the training wheels come off; and their checkride like the first day of school—moments of pride, anxiety, and letting go, all at once.
